Survivor Conference 2023: Game On! is a virtual event taking place from February 4-10, and there are several ways to get involved as a volunteer.
Options include serving as a DAILY HOST/MC, sharing your cancer story as a STORYTIMER, or hosting within our virtual chill-out spaces as a VIRTUAL HOSTS AND GATHER GUIDE.
Training and support will be provided for all roles. Volunteers must have stable internet and be comfortable on camera and microphone via Zoom. Shifts and time commitments vary by role.

STORYTIMERS
If you’ve been with YACC for a while, you may know this role as a “spotlight.” We’re playing with a new name to see if the concept might be more recognizable for those of us that grew up on YouTubers.
Role requirements
- Access to a camera/microphone
- Open to sharing 5-15 minutes of your cancer story (zoomed out from start to now; or focusing on an individual aspect of your story)
- Open to working with YACC team to shape and prepare your story
- You haven’t shared a spotlight or storytime before at a similar event
Your mission
Storytimes are pre-filmed and focused on sharing parts of your cancer stories. We’re hoping to offer storytimes in a few ways. One is by sharing your story in a more chronological way (before cancer, the diagnosis, and where you are now). Another way is by leaning into a specific theme or aspect of your story, like sharing the details of navigating fertility preservation or in finding mental health support.
Optional co-op mode
If it makes sense to share the storytelling by bringing in a caregiver or a YACCer you’ve built a connection with, give us your pitch!
Training
You’ll work with a YACC staff member on this project to have support with development and filming/editing!
Shifts
This is pre-filmed, so we can work that out together.
One Storytime will play each day.
VIRTUAL HOSTS AND GATHER GUIDES
Have you been in a YACC social committee before? Been a Localife Leader? If building connection is something you love to do- this is the role for you!
Role requirements
- Access to a camera/microphone
- Stable internet and access to a laptop or desktop computer
- Enjoys learning new technology and games
- Compassionate and interested in building community and connections through conversation and activities
Your mission
We are using something new called Gather Town (here’s an overview). Gather Town looks like a video game and allows our community to interact more like “real” life. People can have one on one conversations, group conversations, play games, run into each other, and other fun things.
We’re seeking volunteers to act as hosts during the event, encourage social connections, and break the ice!
We are also hoping that some of our volunteers may be able to support accessibility needs of other volunteers and participants by acting as visual guides when this accommodation is requested.
- Multiplayer
- You’ll have the support of other volunteers and YACC staff while in the space
- This is the most socially involved role, where you’ll get to hang out with new friends and old!
Training
YACC will provide a brief training session as well as a specific cheat sheet for you for the day to make sure you have a guide! YACC staff will also be available the day of for support.
Time commitment
Multiple shifts available with lengths and time to accommodate most!
