Recapping the 2016 Big Cancer Hook-up

By Lesley Morrissey

YACC held its third Big Cancer Hook-up on February 27, 2016! It was another awesome show, which was made even better by our amazing guests! Julie, Justin, Matt, and Emily shared their stories to a captivated national audience of young adult cancer patients/survivors, supporters, and health professionals.

Our co-hosts, Geoff and Kathy, continued to make us laugh with their onscreen chemistry, and it was great to be able to introduce Finnegan Critch to our community.

This live event was watched by over 280 people across the country; 99 of these individuals were completely new to YACC. For those returning, thank you for watching and being involved again this year. For you who are new to YACC, welcome to the family!

This event would never have been possible without the help of some very important people. Firstly our volunteers across the country; this includes our on-camera guests as well as all of the volunteers who hosted events in St. John’s, Halifax, Ottawa, Hamilton, Toronto, Manitoba, Regina, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, and Victoria!. Our survivor and health professional volunteers found amazing venues, organized the A/V, planned snacks, and helped with promotion. Then, on the night of the event, they made each and every attendee feel at home and comfortable.

We also couldn’t have had this event without our local partners, specifically our partners that offer their own programs to our patient/survivor population. Big thanks to each and every one of you: Wellwood Hamilton, Maple Soft Center, Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation, Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, CancerCare Manitoba, Wellspring Calgary, and Inspire Health in Vancouver and Victoria.

We also need to thank our event sponsors, including the VOCM Cares Foundation, Bell Aliant TV 1, C95, Rock 102, and CKOM!

Another very important shout out we need to make is to our audio visual crew. Without their team spirit and willingness to jump in and work with us to take this event up another notch, it literally could not have happened. Thank you Tristram Clarke and your crew!
Now let’s get started on the 2017 show!
