On June 25, over 70 people gathered at the Royal Canadian Legion in Holyrood, NL to participate in the 10th anniversary of the Darryl Gorman Memorial Walk.
As we had mentioned before, Darryl was a 16-year-old cancer buddy of Geoff’s who passed away in 1999 after battling testicular cancer. His family has been honouring his memory each year since 2001 with the 5.3 km walk through the community to Furey’s.
We were thrilled to participate with his friends, family, and neighbours–some of which had their own cancer stories to tell. As the banner led the way, and the emergency vehicles bookended the parade, men, women, children, and pets supported Young Adult Cancer Canada on Darryl’s behalf.
When the day was done, and the prizes were handed out, they raised $6,350 to bring their 10 year total up to over $46,000! That means throughout the last decade, they have raised enough money to send 46 survivors to one of our face-to-face programs like Retreat Yourself and the Survivor Conference!
Top Five Fundraisers:
- Mary Barron: $1244
- Maggie Ghaney: $688
- Joe and Theresa Gorman: $380
- Mabel Murray: $324
- Sherry Moore Hickey: $265
Thank you to everyone who was involved this year; we can’t wait to see you again in 2012!
