It was an action-filled Friday afternoon in Upper Island Cove as St. Peter’s Elementary held their very first Shave for the Brave event on June 5, 2015!
Head Hunter Darren Mercer — who recently had his own cancer experience — just knew it was something their school and community had to take part in. Principal John Drover welcomed Young Adult Cancer Canada’s (YACC) very own Dawn Bishop, a graduate of St. Peter’s, back to the school, and she was pumped and excited to bring the Shave back home.
Razor led a parade of St. Peter’s Saints who were Shaving while the music was pumping and kids were cheering.
Stephen Lynch and his nan, Eileen Smith, a cancer survivor of over 20 years, kicked it off. Also, a grandfather jumped in last-minute to share the moment with his grandson. There were also two father-son pairs, a sister making the cut on her brother, a teacher taking the clippers to two of her grade 9 students, a gorgeous red hair ponytail donation, and awesome new cut for a little girl, and the camaraderie of friends coming together to Shave for the Brave and help support YACC.
St. Peter’s set a goal of $2,000 for their first Shave for the Brave, and totally crushed it, raising $5,800!
Special thanks to the Shavers and their supporters, Darren Mercer, principal John Drover, teacher Jean Squibb, and stylists Kim Adams (Kim’s Hair Studio), Terrie Lynn Mercer, Noelle Lynch, and Rob Dove (Rob’s Barber Shop).
