The atmosphere at the Scotiabank Theatre in St. John’s was a little different on the morning of June 13, 2015 as 10 Cineplex employees stepped out from behind the concession stands to Shave for the Brave and raised over $2,300 in support of Young Adult Cancer Canada before lunch!
The Scotiabank Theatre is in the Avalon Mall, which is where the St. John’s Community Shave—our largest Shave—has taken place since 2010. The theatre has been peripherally involved in the event by offering space for our Shave Day base camp, and Head Hunter Becky Hollett thought it was time to take our growing partnership to the next level.
Becky says Cineplex’s audience and employees are mostly young adults in the 15-39-year-old age range, and it was an easy link to make, especially with the awareness surrounding the event amongst the team. For example, Angela Snow shaved her head when she was in the seventh grade, and decided to donate over 10 inches of hair this year, and Kurt Buchheit also shaved in 2012. He came back this year in support of a friend who recently relapsed. Richard Noseworthy last Shaved at Prince of Wales Collegiate in 2013, and Cody Clarke is now a three-time Shaver.
General manager Norman Millberry shaved for the first time in an act of solidarity with his crew, as did cast members Josh Rumbolt, Josh Rodgers, Josh Remedious, Kirk Sooley, and Lisa Reid-Loder (who had an audience of her two children and husband).
Huge thank you to Becky for inviting us in, to the team at the Scotiabank Theatre for jumping on board, and to their supporters and donors who cheered them on along the way! We hope to see you again in 2016!
